'Metamorphosis' by Lucy Threlfall

May 29 - June 8 'On show will be a new series of painting developed in response to Ovid’s narrative poem Metamorphoses. This extensive and fascinating piece of writing, comprising fifteen books and collating some two hundred and fifty myths, has inspired more artists than any other literary work, ranging from Renaissance masters to twentieth century feminist activists. Constant change, karmic forces and a distinct sense of fluidity runs through Ovid’s lines as he appropriates mythological figures and events, making their themes and ethical propositions immediately relevant to contemporary political discussions and much of the art we see blooming today. I also look at Metamorphoses through the lens of modern life, being a mother and a painter struggling to identify with any traditional role and increasingly coming to terms with being permanently ‘in transition’.' - Lucy Threlfall
