The Long Nights

For Intoart’s latest exhibition we bring together works by six of our artists that evoke the mood of wintertime in the Northern hemisphere. In Denmark they have a particular word – hygge (pronounced HUE-gah) – to describe the feeling of familiarity and gladness we feel when coming into the warmth of home, to the company of family and friends, after spending time outside in winter nature.

Some works celebrate the long winter nights, the warmth and sparkle of the festive moment, and the tradition of fireside storytelling, evocative of the mysteries and darkness of the night outside. Other works call up images of the short winter days, of wandering in nature or in the city, in the Northern winter light. Where Kevin Jacobs and Philomena Powell walk us out into dark mysterious forests and onto windswept beaches, Mawuena Kattah guides us indoors towards colourful, decorative interiors and portraits, and Clifton Wright invites us to pore through the family photo album. Yoshiko Phillips pursues an emblematic visual language suggestive of decoration and ritual. Ntiense Eno Amooquaye’s landscape forms and figures, with their heightened, mystical quality, are perhaps what we will dream of once the evening is over.

On Friday 2 December, following a new commission from Tate Exchange, Ntiense Eno Amooquaye will present The Shadow, a spoken word and projection performance exploring themes of flight and metamorphosis. Invited artists Ole Hagen and Kit Poulson will perform their newly commissioned piece The Clumsy Bramble Picker, which responds to The Long Nights with eccentric storytelling, Foley music and shadow theatre.

Complementing the original artworks and prints in the exhibition, we are delighted to present new Winter Season products from Design by Intoart.
